Welcome to the Whanganui Intermediate School Literacy Awards programme. The purpose of the programme is to help you increase your reading mileage and challenge yourself with books that are well written and will improve your language and reading abilities.
Literacy One Guidelines
Read six books approved by your teacher. (No more than two books by the same author or in the same series. No short stories please).
- For each of the six books, you will write a brief response in your recording book. Writing should be kept to a minimum but opinions will need to be justified, i.e. "It was a good book" is not acceptable.
- As well as responding to the books, you will also be required to complete an activity for two of the books. The activities are aimed at increasing your awareness of literature and how it is structured. You must choose two tasks, one of which should be presented in written format, the other orally.
- Activities must be completed to a high standard to qualify for an award (i.e. it needs to be earned).
- Once both activities have been completed both you and your teacher must complete the evaluation section of the booklet. A ribbon and certificate will be presented at Assembly.
Literacy Two Guidelines
- Read six books on a similar theme. Some suggestions are - Family stories, adventure stories, war stories, animal stories, fantasy and there are many more.
- For each of the six books, you will enter the following in your booklet - Title, Author, Date you started and finished the book, A brief summary of the story, Three to five sentences that include what you liked/disliked about the story, Who was your favourite character and why.
- Prepare a poster promoting your chosen theme. It must feature all of the six books that you have chosen. It must include a summary of each of the stories and a description of the theme you chose.
- Present you poster to the class to encourage other students to read your chosen books.
- You now have a choice of three activities to complete the written section of Literacy Two.
Literacy Three Guidelines
- Read eight books from the list of prescribed books (abridged or picture book versions are not acceptable). You may choose up to three books by any of the listed authors but they must be classified as a classic. (Check with the Librarian if you are unsure if a book qualifies).
- For each of the books, you will enter the following in your booklet - Title, Author, Date you started and finished the book, A brief summary of the story, Three to five sentences that include what you liked/disliked about the story, Who was your favourite character and why.
- In 3/4 - 1 page you should outline the development of a character throughout the book or books in the series (i.e. personality traits, changes in character, important events etc.).
- View a DVD based on one of the books you have read and present a comparison with the book based on similarities and differences. (Try to include possible reasons for these). Present in a chart form or Venn diagram.
- Present a review based on one of your novels, you must include detailed information on each of the following - Synopsis or story plot, Setting, Characters (include and in depth description of one and a brief description of others), Author (include other books you author has written), Opinion and recommendations. Your information should be presented in booklet format with each section on a separate page.
Literacy Four Guidelines
For Literacy Four it is expected that all your work is neatly presented in an attractive manner. Booklet format preferred. All tasks must be fully completed showing a high level of achievement and originality.
- Read a biography of a famous person. (Have your class teacher or the librarian check the book you choose for suitability). Present a timeline of the important events in their life and write 4 - 500 words describing their particular achievement. Write an extra paragraph stating how you think the world maybe without that person's contribution.
- Select and important event in history e.g. Tangiwai Disaster. Research this using three different sources (one of which maybe a website). Draw up a table listing similarities and differences between the sources. Highlight and discuss these giving possible reasons.
- Read three books by the same author but not in the same series. Research the author and present an oral summary of their life, writing experiences and achievements plus any other interesting information about them you discover. List similarities and differences between the three books you read.
- Choose a book written by a New Zealand/Australian author. Write a 1/2 - 1 page description of what the book is about, Make a list of other books the author has written, Choose one character, describe him or her, what sort of person are they?, Where does the story take place and what can you find out about the area?, Describe the setting as fully as you can.
Literacy Five Guidelines
Write your own novelette of at least 7,500 words.
