Sports & Outdoor Recreation

Most of the pupils experience some form of outdoor education during their time at Whanganui Intermediate. Parent participation in class camps is both welcome and necessary.

At Whanganui Intermediate School we pride ourselves in being able to
offer our students a wide range of sporting opportunities and students are
encouraged to participate in school sports teams.
Students are able to compete in Interclass, Intercluster and Interschool
competitions against other schools. There are also opportunities for
students to compete in after school competitions and receive coaching from

Sailing is an excellent opportunity to try out a sport you may not have considered before.
Whanganui Intermediate have their own Optimist yachts and Whizz kayaks for students to use.

Whanganui Intermediate School currently holds the Supersport banner for Athletics. T
Throughout term 4 all classes take part in athletics training and then compete in the Intercluster competition.
Those competing in school teams also receive additional training.

Whanganui Intermediate has a strong basketball team and has sent teams to the AIMS games as well as Interschool and Supersport
Basketball is offered in our Wednesday afternoon Academy programme

At WIS we offer tackle, touch and rippa rugby throughout the year.

We offer football for boys and girls during the winter terms.
Football is a popular choice for many students on Wednesday afternoons
In terms 2 & 3 WIS teams take part in the Saturday morning competition at Wembley Park.

Whanganui Intermediate School has a very strong netball programme which runs through terms 2 and 3.
A team of teachers are involved in coaching and managing teams.
Netball is another popular choice for students during Wednesday academy time
A number of our students are in the Whanganui Rep teams.

Cross Country
Every year we hold an Interclass cross country competition which all students participate in.
From this we select our team to go to the Interschool competition.
We always seem to have some excellent cross country runners to represent our school.


Our Astro-turf courts allow tennis lessons to hbe part of our PE programme.
Life Saving
We have a strong lifesaving team who train through term 1 and compete in the interschool life-saving competition.
We are the current holders of both boys and girls shields for the Interschool Lifesaving Championships.

During terms 1 and 4 (weather permitting) all classes have swimming lessons as part of their PE programme.
We also run an Intercluster swimming competition early in term 1.
From this competition we select our team to compete for the school in the Interschool competition.

Students are able to take part in badminton competition after school on Tuesdays at Springvale Stadium.

All students also have lessons introducing them to badminton and helping them improve their skills in term 2.

We have a full winter hockey team as part of winter sports throughout terms 2 & 3.
Hockey is also a Wednesday academy option.

Whanganui Intermediate has a number of 8-a-side hardball cricket teams who play on Saturday morning during
terms 1 and 4.

Softball at WIS is played in terms 1 and 4.
Games are played on Saturdays at the Braves Softball Park in Gonville.

WIS students can play in teams which compete in terms 1 and 4 on Wednesday after school.

Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is offered as part of winter sports.
Students regularly have the opportunity to ride the bike trails in the local area.
Our best students are selected to compete in mountain biking competitions throughout the year.

Road Cycling & Triathlon
There is an Academy that runs throughout the year, during and after school, for the development of competitive
triathletes and road cyclists.
Our best students are selected to compete in competitions throughout the year.
