Arts & Cultural Activities

Whanganui Intermediate has a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved in the arts and often compete at regional competitions.

We have a Performing Arts Centre built to meet the needs of our students in music, drama and dance. The centre is equipped with full range of musical instruments and includes a full suite of electronic keyboards.

Music tuition is offered on a range of instruments.

All students have the opportunity to be involved in the school production or festival of the arts.

Janne Bradley teaches Performing Arts while Michaela Luxton takes charge of Visual Arts. They are also supported by a number of classroom teachers with a passion for the arts. In particular, Louise Tie who organizes our school choir and Tracey Dent who runs drama sessions on Wednesday afternoons.

Wearable Arts
Students can apply to take part in the wearable arts competition, held annually. Supported by our Art teacher Mrs Hildreth, students create an outfit and a performance to fulfill a brief set by the hosting school. Students work on their project during afternoon extension times.
Whanganui Intermediate won the Super Arts Wearable Arts competition "At the Bottom of the Garden" in 2017.

Whanganui Intermediate School puts on a full school production every two years. Our next production will be in 2020. We have performed many well known productions with extremely large casts such as Hairspray, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Alice in Wonderland and The Little Mermaid.

Teams of dancers from Whanganui Intermediate School take part in the SuperArts dance competition in Palmerston North. Miss Dent usually takes responsibility for organising this group. Students are expected to choreograph and perform two dances which fulfill the criteria for the year.

Whanganui Intermediate School has an excellent school choir and won the Superarts choir competition in 2014. Practices are held during afternoon extension times.
